Self-Care: taking time for yourself at home

“Self-care means giving yourself permission to pause.” We all know that stress, daily life and overworked schedules can mean no time for yourself, whether that means no time for exercise, seeing friends or just a soothing face mask in the evening. Taking time for ourselves is often put at the very bottom of our ‘to-do’ lists and other responsibilities are prioritised.

The action of making the bed feels like the perfect thing to start the day the right way, making it part of your daily ritual means every evening having the enjoyment of entering your bedroom to find a freshly made bed.

1.  Take pleasure from the daily rituals

We often get caught up in the rush of the daily routine: wake up, shower, breakfast, work, dinner, bedtime…and repeat! The secret about self-care is that it’s not something that should happen once in a while on a rare occasion but rather an active and mindful practice to take time for you. So work in a little ‘me’ time in your day. This can be done by making some small changes from your daily routines. If you are a morning person, you can start by waking up 10 minutes earlier to relaxingly make the bed into a beautiful space. This small ritual creates a spirit or tidiness making a good start of your day and also your bedroom is all ready to welcome you to sleep after a long day.

Another tip for self-care is your shower time! Use that time differently, by utilizing this personal moment for absolute relaxation. Light a scented candle with your favorite fragrance and prepare that hair mask you’ve been wanting to try for so long! These soothing scents and small gestures, trigger positive emotion which helps your mind and body unwind and recharge. Same goes for an evening face mask as you read a few chapters of the book you’ve been reading! Set time aside in your schedule to do a proper skincare routine and assign a bit extra time when it suits whether in the morning and before your bedtime, there is a certain joy in taking care of your skin. It can be as simple as wearing your favourite lush Silk Kimono to your morning coffee, then taking a little time to appreciate how great it feels, can make all the difference. Remember don’t make this part of a to do list but rather find these small things that make you happy and work them into your daily rituals, you’ll be surprised by the positive results!

2.  Take a time out and breathe

Experts say that regulating your breathing brings many surprising benefits that are unexpected. It can help you both physically and mentally, boosting your mood while reducing anxiety and stress. So, as an important part of your self-care practice, engage in an activity where you have relaxing conditions and do some breathing exercises. Sometimes it takes nothing but a few deep belly breaths upon waking to completely rebalance yourself. We are not breathing experts but there are many methods available online and YouTube tutorials on everything from meditation, yoga, and more. Find one that suits you and make it your own! These breathing techniques can be combined with your workout or exercise routine, add an extra 10 minutes at the end of your workout to do some deep breathing exercises. The great thing about this is you can do it from anywhere at home, from your bubble bath, your sofa or on a yoga mat in your living room floor. The only thing is to find a quiet space where you can completely unwind. If you manage to make a regular practice of meditation, breathing exercises or yoga, you’ll be impressed to find that you will feel more centered, calm, full of energy and connected to yourself and others.

3. Do more of what makes you happy

Possible one of the most important parts of self-care is finding something that is just for you because it makes you feel good. It does not matter what your friend finds joyful, it’s all about what makes you happy

Self-care: 2) Take a time out and breathe

Some will love and find joy in watering indoor plants daily to baking or spending an extra 30 minutes in super soft bed sheets in the morning to read, what matters is having some time that is just for you.
