Why Should We Use a Top Sheet?

A top sheet is a simple sheet that you drape over yourself to sleep underneath of, just like a duvet cover. It should not be confused with a fitted sheet which is the sheet that is elasticated and that goes over the mattress. Some people like to use both a top sheet and a duvet cover, while some prefer a top sheet only or on the opposite completely disregard the top sheet and sleep with a duvet only. The Top Sheet has been a source of great debate in households around the world, and ultimately it is a decision based on personal preference.
Why Should We Use a Top Sheet?

Some people find the Top Sheet superfluous, while others can’t sleep without it. In any case, arguments for the use of top sheets or not can be found in both cases with some persuasive points. Although more and more people are avoiding to use the Top Sheet, we in fact believe that a top sheet can have wonderful benefits. We’ve found 4 key reasons explaining why we should use Top Sheet for our bed that we elaborate on in this blog.

1. Gives your bed a structured Hotel-Look

There is something wonderfully pleasing to check in to your hotel room and see the beautifully made bed, the top sheet neatly tucked in and gorgeous duvet cover draped on top. Luxury hotels use fitted sheets, top sheets, duvets, pillows and cushions to make their stunning beds in order to provide their customers the best sleep experience. You can also make your bed look as inviting as a luxury hotel by imitating what they do. One of the key layers that people forget at home is the top sheet, it can be a gorgeous addition to the bed as it gets folded over the duvet and creates that neat tucked-in look. When we create a deluxe sleep space with our range of luxury embroidered bedding, we use top sheets! The embroidery will stunningly show at the top of the bed as it is draped on top of the duvet. A designer tip: mix-and-match colours and patterns to create the bed of your dreams that suits your unique bedroom style.

2. Great for Warmer Weather

Because of the combination of the temperature of your body and the heat of a heavy duvet, people living in hot countries may feel uncomfortable or unable to find restful sleep at night. A top sheet is incredibly lightweight and fluid which makes it easy to kick off on warmer nights and allows enough air to pass through to refresh you. Therefore, using a top sheet on its own without a duvet is the perfect choice in summer or tropical climates. We love our Top Sheets for this, as they are made from 100% Extra Long Staple Cotton 400TC, a breathable and soft fabric that that can keep your body temperature cool, helping you fall into a deserved deep slumber.

3. Keeps your Duvet Clean

Some people like to have both a top sheet and a duvet cover! We know that this choice can be an aesthetic choice but for some, it is a hygiene one. The top sheet acts as a protection to your duvet or bed cover, your body comes in direct contact only with the sheet so keeps your duvet clean through the night. Think about how long it takes to wash your heavy duvet or costly it is to send your bed cover to dry cleaning every two weeks. However, when you use a Top Sheet, it keeps you from having to wash your duvet cover as frequently, so you only need to wash Top Sheet every two weeks. Top sheets are much thinner & lighter which makes it easier to wash, they can save you a lot of time!

4. It is the Traditional Way of Making the Bed

Making the bed with a top sheet is the traditional way, you may decide to use a Top Sheet as a no-brainer simply because that’s how Mom did it. We habitually do things in result of our mother’s teaching when we were kids and this follows us in our life until we are grown. In many places including Europe and America, the old school way of making the bed is with a fitted sheet, top sheet, blanket and pillows.

Sleeping for years in a certain way gradually become one of our habits. This explains the reason why some people continue to use top sheets, without them they feel like something is missing. Using a Top Sheet to make the bed is passed down from generation to generation and still used today as our traditional way of making the bed.

In the end, top sheet or no top sheet is truly based on personal preferences. Whether you like using a top sheet or not, that is your opinion. One thing’s for sure, a top sheet can look simply gorgeous on a bed and if you’re looking to upgrade your bedroom look this may be the way to do it. We certainly are on the pro top sheet team. There is no such feeling as sliding into bed in the evening and untucking the neatly made bed, a true pleasure!
